What is DNA actually?

DNA stands for Deoxyribonucleic Acid. It is a molecule made up of two long chains of nucleotides that carry genetic information in living organisms. The structure of DNA resembles a twisted ladder, with the nucleotides forming the rungs and the sugar-phosphate backbone forming the sides. DNA carries instructions for the development, function, and reproduction of all living things, from bacteria to humans. The sequence of the nucleotides in DNA determines the genetic code that governs the traits of an organism.
